DIY Clamp and Equipment Storage Rack (with Step-by-Step Plans)

Tool Rack

When Paul from Minnesota needed a space-saving storage system for his large clamps and equipment, he turned to Kee Klamp fittings - a tool he had experience with - in order to build the perfect solution.

But Paul knew that Kee Klamp fittings aren’t just for work: he also used them to build a windsurfing board rack and a zip line so that he can better entertain his grandkids and visitors to his lake house.

In this article, we’ll share the exact fittings Paul used and cover step-by-steps plans for assembling the rack. We’ll also discuss his board rack project and plans for the zip line.

Let’s get to work:

Paul’s Clamp Storage Rack Project Details

Paul has worked with Kee Klamp fittings before, so relying on them to solve his unique organizational problem was a no-brainer:

“I have been using Kee Klamp fittings for a couple years. I thought I would share one of my projects with you that was a huge problem solver. I live on a lake with limited space for equipment storage, especially "bull-work" equipment, such as come-alongs, dock pipe mallet, extension cords, clamps, etc.”

Such heavy-duty equipment needed a heavy-duty solution. Kee Klamp fittings are as durable as they are functional, making them an ideal component of specialized equipment storage systems.

Paul describes how he designed the plans for his clamp rack:

“I went to my CAD design platform, Rhino-5, and came up with a mobile clamp rack that solved all problems.”

DIY Pipe Rack

The result is a compact storage system with several handy features:

The addition of Fixing Pads allows for a bottom shelf, which is perfect for storing an air compressor or shop vac.

Hooks at the end of the horizontal pipes help store small items like dust brooms and measuring tapes.

Large Flange fittings at either end of the topmost horizontal pipe are good for storing extension cords.

Casters make the rack easily portable no matter the weight.

Furthermore, the swivel sockets at the top allow for angles less than ninety degrees, ensuring the rack’s compact design.

Fittings for the Storage Rack

While we don’t know the exact dimensions of Paul’s rack, these fittings can help get you started on any rack of a similar size or scale:

Steps to Build Your Own Storage Rack

Although this project has several different types of Kee Klamp fittings, there’s no need to be daunted by assembly. The set screw feature allows you to reposition Kee Klamp fittings in case you accidentally place them at the wrong height, while never compromising on strength.

Pipe Storage Rack

Here’s a general overview of how to put it all together:

1. Start by assembling the base, as seen in the picture above, but be sure to add the four Single Socket Tee fittings so that you can attach the top portion of the rack later on.

2. Attach the Casters, then lock the brakes firmly.

3. Slide the Male Swivel Socket fittings onto the pipe that you plan to use for the top bar. Attach the Female Swivel Socket fittings to the male fittings. Add Flange fittings to either end of the pipe.

4. Slide the Crossover fittings onto the vertical pipes, then attach the pipes to the Swivel Sockets on one end and the Single Socket Tees on the other.

5. Slide the horizontal pipes through the Crossover fittings. Add Hooks on either end and seal the pipes with plugs, as seen in the picture below.

By now, you should have a clamp storage rack similar to Paul’s.

Paul’s Other Projects with Kee Klamp Fittings

Paul didn’t stop with his clamp storage rack. An avid user of Kee Klamp fittings, he quickly put together another storage solution to accommodate one of his hobbies:

“Another project using Kee Klamp fittings was a board rack that I mount in the lake that holds my windsurfing boards.”

While Paul didn’t include a picture of his board rack, we can see how a ready-made rack like this one could be easily replicated with Kee Klamp fittings and galvanized pipe, both for a fraction of the cost and with additional adaptability in case one of the boards has unusual dimensions.

Paul was satisfied with how his new storage racks came out and has already started planning the next exciting structure for his lake house:

“A new project I'm working on for this coming spring (I live in Minnesota) is a platform using Kee Klamp fittings and galvanized 1 ½" pipe for a zip line that will run from the end of my dock toward shore, a distance of about 100-125 feet. Hope it to be a hit with my grandkids and visiting guests.”

Considering other Kee Klamp customers have already successfully built a variety of recreational projects, from a portable soccer goal to this amazing treehouse, we’re sure Paul’s zip line will be a hit with his friends and family this summer.
