5 DIY Metal Stair Railing Examples

Metal stair handrail is required or desired on the steps of most homes and businesses to provide assistance to people who are entering and exiting the building. Below are 5 different metal handrail projects that have been constructed by our customers. The projects range in complexity, but as you will see, none are too complicated for the DIY enthusiast.

Simple Metal Stair Handrail for Back Door Accessibility

Metal Stair Handrail for Accessibility

This metal handrail was built with two of our C50 Hybrid Metal Handrail Kits. The hybrid kits allow you to attach to the wall on one end and the ground level on the other end. The nice feature of this DIY metal handrail kit is that it allows you to construct the railing at almost any angle. Both ends contain swivel joints so the railing can be angled to your preference.

Here is what the customer who installed this railing had to say about their experience:

After my 91 year-old father died a little over a year ago, my mother was adamant in her desire to continue living alone on their 80 acre farm. Since then, my brothers and I have been working on projects around the house that will help her keep her independence, but live safely at the same time. We installed hand rails out her back door, which had not been present before the task was undertaken. The job was a snap, and the Kee Klamp and Kee Lite fittings were the perfect fit for this job. The pictures show the completed job and our happy 86 year-old mother, Kathryn!

Simple Metal Handrail for the Front Steps

Metal Stair Handrail for Front Step

Eric, from Indianapolis, built this metal handrail for his front steps. He used the C50 Surface Mount Railing Kit. Similar to the hybrid kit above, this railing allows for just about any angle and requires very little drilling. Here's what Eric had to say about installing his railing:

After falling down these steps during an ice storm, I decided I wanted to put up a very sturdy metal handrail and this is indeed a very sturdy unit. It took a while to drill the 4 - 1/2" holes 4" deep, even with a hammer drill, but I got them done eventually. Hint: buy a good quality masonry drill bit.

We agree with Eric's tip. A good masonry bit will help to cut down the time drilling into the concrete. If you are wondering what it's like to install one of these DIY stair railing kits, check out the videos on the Metal Stair Handrail Kit page.

Metal Handrail with Custom Curves (No Bending Required)

Metal Handrail that Curves

Putting curves into pipe railing can be difficult. Thankfully, there are special metal handrail fittings which make this task easy. There are several adjustable angle fittings that can be used to create curves and make a railing that fits perfectly into its surroundings. This metal stair handrail used Obtuse Angle Elbows to navigate the corners. The result was fantastic! David from Wisconsin said this:

The owner of house (a group home) wanted a replacement railing that would stand the test of time, so after much research I went with modular pipe handrail fittings, and made this rock solid railing.

Metal Railing Mounted to the Side of the Stairs

Metal Stair Haindrails Mounted to Side of Steps

This stairway was so narrow, the homeowner wanted to attach the railing to the side of the concrete steps. With modular pipe fittings for metal railings this is no problem! Using a special wall-mounted base flange, this railing was mounted directly to the side of the concrete steps. Dave, from Minnesota, had this to stay about his new railing:

The main reason I decided to use the fitting's were because of the adjustable angle I needed for the top of the handrail. The handrail was very easy to build and install. I used my own pipe after carefully measuring the inside and outside diameter's. Then after a trial fit, painted pipe and all fittings to match. Now my wife and all who use it are happy.
