ADA-Compliant Ramp Railings for Town Park

Public spaces play a vital role in building stronger, more connected communities. The Borough of Bath recognized this when planning a new bandshell and performance platform at Cliff Cowling Park.

The vision was not only to create a functional performance space but also to ensure that it would be safe and accessible for all members of the community.

By integrating ADA-compliant handrails from the beginning, the project reflects a forward-thinking approach that balances creativity and inclusivity. 

Planning ADA-Handrails for New Structure

The Borough of Bath has taken a major step forward in the development of its new bandshell and performance platform at Cliff Cowling Park.

Designed as a porch addition to the north wall of the Cliff Cowling Announcer Booth, the new structure will feature a covered roof, accessible ramps, and electrical service.

After several months of planning, design, and permitting, the project moved into construction. To keep costs manageable, much of the work was completed by volunteers, with the Borough hiring a concrete contractor only for the platform and ramp foundation.

As part of this work, PVC sleeves were embedded in the concrete at strategic locations, allowing for easy installation of ADA-compliant railings later in the process. 

This thoughtful step ensured that accessibility requirements could be met efficiently without unnecessary expense, demonstrating the value of early planning in community projects. 

ADA-Handrails for Existing Ramps

Because they had the concrete ramp installed ahead of time, the volunteer team in Bath began searching for an ADA-compliant handrail that could be installed into their existing ramp and PVC sleeves. 

This is where they found Simplified Building. They sent an email about their project to our team and were connected with project specialist Sean Conner, who talked through the project and expectations for this ADA-handrail.

Once given the dimensions of the ramp and where the posts needed to go, Sean was able to create a 3D model of the handrail. Using our modular Kee Klamp fittings and gator tubing, he was able to design a perfect handrail system that met the necessary dimensions while also adhering to the necessary ADA ramp handrail regulations. 

After the drawing and specifications were sent to the team in Bath, they were thrilled to find a system that would meet all their needs and had the ramp handrails ordered ASAP.

When it came time to install the ADA railings, the group of volunteers was able to handle the project themselves. Thanks to the pre-planned PVC sleeves, and the simple set screw system of our modular ADA handrails, the railing installation was straightforward and required no additional contractors.

This not only saved the Borough money but also empowered the local community to directly contribute to the project’s success.
