DIY Wall Mounted Pipe Shelf with Matching Convertible Bunk Bed

Wall Mounted Pipe Shelf

When David from Danville, Indiana needed a bedroom set for his two boys, he turned to Kee Klamp fittings to create furniture that would grow along with his family. The result is a fully adjustable wall mounted pipe shelf and a bunk bed that can later be converted into individual beds.

David’s project is a great example of how easy it is to build unique pieces using Kee Klamp fittings; his wall mounted pipe shelf was customized from this bundle with the help of our project assistance team.

In this article, we’ll discuss some of the modifications David made to his wall mounted pipe shelves and how that influenced assembly. We’ll also cover the exact fittings he used to make the bunk bed and talk about the possibilities for converting it into individual beds.

Let’s get started:

David’s Wall Mounted Pipe Shelf Project Details

As we mentioned, David’s shelf project is simply a customized version of this bundle. He originally wanted a much larger shelving system that would cover most of the wall. Our project assistance team quickly modified the bundle to create a kit that would allow for four long shelves held up by four vertical pipe supports.

However, David encountered an unexpected challenge:

“We had to make one minor change. The shelves were originally going all across the wall, with four pipes vertically, but because of a rather odd stud placement we had to go as three.”

One of the benefits of building projects with Kee Klamp fittings and pipes is that they can be easily modified at any time. Simply use a pipe cutter from your local hardware store to make sudden adjustments in length. Kee Klamp’s innovative set screw design also allows you to change the placement of a fitting as needed, all while providing the same strength as a welded joint.

David then discovered that some of the set screws were difficult to tighten at first:

“Some were very, very stubborn and required lubricant to get them to finally move, while others tightened with no problems. I would estimate about one third of the fittings had this problem. But, we still love the stuff and I certainly have other ideas.”

As David said, a cheap and widely available aerosol lubricant should help you sidestep any initial stiffness in the set screws.

A final alteration to David’s wall mounted shelves are the fixing pads, which you can see in the middle of the horizontal pipes. Fixing pads prevent your shelves from moving around and, if desired, allow you to make the edges of the shelves flush with the pipe.

David’s Bunk Bed Project Details

Pipe Bed

Although David’s bunk bed wasn’t built from one of our kits, he still found it a snap to build and a great option for his kids:

“The bed came out just as we planned. The best part is that when they grow up, we can make them two identical Kee Klamp beds for when they start college or move out.”

To convert the bunk bed into individual twin size beds, David will simply need to cut the vertical pipes, then take off the ladder and guard rail by removing the tee fittings. Excess pipe and leftover fittings from the ladder, guard rail, and vertical pipe could be repurposed into headboards.

Converting the twin size beds into full size beds or larger may take new, longer sections of pipe; however, the Kee Klamp fittings can be reused thanks to their set screw design.

In addition, Kee Klamp fittings and pipe offer a timeless, versatile style that can be played up or down depending on how your tastes change.
