Artistic Shade Structure for New York City Bus Stop
In the summer of 2025, the vibrant installation “Limes” transformed Washington Empire Plaza in Brooklyn, New York, into a welcoming, shaded public space celebrating Caribbean culture.
Created by the Latina women-led artist collective @alumbra_barrio in collaboration with @iamcaribbeing, and commissioned through the NYC DOT Art Community Commissions program, this piece drew its name from the Caribbean slang "to lime", meaning to gather and relax.
Bringing Art Installations to Life
To bring their vision to life, the artists partnered with Simplified Building to construct a modular pipe-and-fittings shade system.
During early design conversations with project specialist Nate, it became clear that the collective needed a structure that could be installed quickly, withstand outdoor conditions, and frame their artistically woven metal fences for their shade roof.
The Kee Klamp system checked every box by offering speed, durability, weather resistance, and the flexibility needed for a one-of-a-kind creative space.
The final build featured a grid-like canopy suspended above the benches, offering both shade and a sculptural visual element.
Other important details of this structure include its bases and the bench itself. For the bases,you’ll see two large blocks. These were designed to create a colorful base so that the structure itself wouldn’t mount onto the sidewalk. This helped with not having to damage the city sidewalk and make the structure “mobile” as they could move the bases as they needed to in the event they move this art installation elsewhere in the city.Granted,it’s still going to be super heavy.
Next, looking at the bench, you can see the two bars that stretch out across the width of the seat. This is to help separate seats on the bench so that three people can comfortably sit alongside each other.

Its modular design made installation straightforward, as a mix of artists, fabricators, and local participants were able to install it themselves while maintaining the strength and stability needed for public use.

“Limes” is a shining example of how pipe-and-fittings systems can redefine public space, making it more accessible, adaptable, and community-centered.
