Jungle Gym Ideas for Indoors and Outdoors
The backyard of your house can be a wonderful playground for your kids, and you too because you’re never too old to have fun! The inside of your house can also be made to be just as fun because we know the weather isn’t perfect all year round, so having the ability to have a fun play space inside will make sure the fun doesn’t have to take a rain check.
Jungle gyms can provide the greatest variety in terms of size and styles when it comes to your backyard playground. The build you design is only limited by your own imagination (to an extent, there’s still physics and safety that you must consider).
You can design something as simple as some monkey bars for your family to enjoy, or you can build a complex “hardcore parkour” structure that makes your yard the talk of the town. Either way, you’ll want your backyard fitted with the best equipment that can optimize fun, customization, and safety.
You don’t even have to call it a jungle gym, you can call it a forest gymnasium, a metal labyrinth, or Tommy’s play place. Feel free to personalize that part to your liking. I’m going to stick with calling it a jungle gym to provide some consistency throughout the article.
Jungle Gym Types
I’m sure you’ve searched online for jungle gyms or playgrounds and you’re finding these very elaborate, pre-built, wooden ones. Don’t get me wrong, these structures look great and check all the boxes for your standard children’s backyard playground. But I believe you can do more, with less. What if you could build and design your own jungle gym? What if you could assemble it all on your own? What if you could have a jungle gym that lasts through all sorts of wear, tear, and weather conditions?
What am I talking about? I’m talking about using pipe and fittings for your next jungle gym project. Our Kee Klamp products have over 100 different types of fittings. These connections will provide the easiest way to create any type of structure you desire. They’re made from galvanized steel that is stronger and lasts a lot longer than other wooden structures.
Size and Style Optimization
Jungle gyms made with pipe and fittings can be modified to (most) any size to fit perfectly in your backyard, or within your home if you have the space, in which case, I’m jealous. An additional benefit to this style of building is that it can be temporary too. You can assemble it and take it apart as needed in case of moving or needing to swap out parts for different sizes. I’ll be going over different types of sizing for both outdoor and indoor jungle gyms that can hopefully provide a clear visual to what you may be looking to design.
Small Indoor or Outdoor Gyms
- Length: 5.00'
- Width: 4.00'
- Height: Configurable (4.00')
- 20 Minutes
- Allen Key
Above is a simple gymnastics bar that can be utilized both indoors and outside. This project was made with aluminum pipes and Kee Lite pipe fittings. It is a nice small playground piece that can be used by smaller children outside or in a playroom! You can use these smaller and lighter pieces to design a jungle gym frame that will fit best in your backyard or within your children’s playroom. Combining the light metal pieces from the picture above and shaping them to how they are below can make for a great and simple jungle gym!
- Height: 2'
- Width: 2'
- Length: 3'
Medium Sized Jungle Gyms
- Height: 8'
- Width: 6'
- Length: 12'
On the medium to larger size, this parkour structure looks intense at first glance, but it is simple enough to be constructed yourself and enjoyed by all those in your family. Kee Klamp fittings make this jungle gym customizable to fit any sized backyard to maximize fun!
Still within the medium size range. This classic dome-shaped style of jungle gym could easily be designed and assembled using our pipe and fittings. This style can provide a variety of fun with just a standard round shape. A smaller version of this could be designed as well to also fit inside a playroom!
Large DIY Outdoor Jungle Gyms
- Height: 10'
- Width: 7'
- Length: 13'
Now getting into the slightly larger side of projects. As seen in this picture, the height is adjustable with this style of jungle gym. Using Kee Klamp products make changing the height and shape of these projects that much easier! This could also be separated into multiple pieces, so instead of one larger jungle gym, you could have two smaller ones. Everyone loves a two for one deal.
Larger Outdoor Parkour Gym
- Height: 7'
- Width: 7'
- Length: 7'
Now for the grand mac daddy finale. This temporary large scale jungle gym was built in Carlsberg and as you can see, is very complex in its scope. (The project layout above only pertains to the larger middle frame, not the entire layout). The structure however can be assembled by even you and me, I know right! If you had this in your backyard, being the “talk of the town” would be an understatement.
There are many ways you could design and plan your jungle gym. I hope this was of some help into planning your next project. If you have more questions, please contact one of our associates to help assist you with your design for a new jungle gym (or Tommy’s play place).
