DIY Entryway Bench with Coat Rack

Bench and Coat Rack

This DIY entryway bench, with integrated coat rack, was built by Ryan for the front entry in his home. Instead of a closet next to the front door when you first enter the home, Ryan's house had an empty space. To make use of this space and give his family somewhere to hang their coats and set aside their boots, Ryan used Kee Klamp fittings and pipe to create the bench and coat rack combo. In this article, we'll take a closer look at Ryan's project and show you how to build one just like it.

The entryway bench features wood slabs, crafted from a dead tree Ryan had on his property, to create the bench and accent the coat rack. The wood was slabbed with a chainsaw, planned down to size, and coated with a clear coat Ryan had laying around.

The coats racks were built using 5/8" bolts with washers welded on in order to create the two different lengths needed for the upper and lower hooks. The wood slabs are attached to the frame using the Fixing Pad fitting. The bottom bench is used to place shoes on when leaving the house or to remove when returning.

Fitting Used In This Project:

Below is a complete list of the fittings used in Ryan's entryway bench. If you build your own, the dimensions are totally up to you. Using pipe and fittings, you can make the bench/coat rack combo as tall or wide as you want. Ryan used size 7 fittings and pipe, but you can use any size you like.

How to Assemble the Bench & Coat Rack

Figure 1

While, just like any project built with Kee Klamp fittings can be assembled in different ways, we have listed the best approach below. Follow the steps to create your own entryway bench and coat rack:

First, start off by assembling each of the side supports, that you will then join together to create the frame. To do this, start with the base of the side support. The exact order in which you attach the fittings is not important, just as long as the base comes together to look like the diagrams above (Assembly, Figure 2) and below (Complete, Figure 3). This section will utilize four Single Socket Tee fittings, one Flange fitting, and one 90 Degree Elbow fitting.

Once the base of the side support is assembled (as shown in Figure 3), you can move onto the rest of the support. The diagram above (Figure 4) illustrates the assembly and the diagram below (Figure 5) shows the completed side support. Again, the exact order is not important, just as long as it comes together as shown in both these diagrams. You will add one Flange fitting, one Single Socket Tee, one Side Outlet Elbow, and one 90 Degree Elbow.

Now, just repeat this process to assemble the second side support. You should then have two supports that look like the diagram above (Figure 6).

From there, you can attach the horizontal supports to complete the frame. The horizontal supports will utilize the Fixing Pad fitting in order to attach the wood slabs to the frame. So be sure to slide these onto the horizontal supports before attaching them to the side supports. The frame should come together as shown in the diagram above (Figure 7) and below (Figure 8).

Once the frame is complete, you can attach the wood platforms to the frame. In Ryan's project, he used wood slabs but you can use any material you like. The Fixing Pad has a hole in the fitting to attach it to a platform. Use the appropriate hardware (wood screws in this case) to attach the platforms.
