Corey spray painted the pipe black and left the fittings in their original, aluminum finish to give the desk an even more unique look. The darker colors of the pipe pair well with the lighter wood table top making for a visually appealing piece.
To paint the pipe, Corey pushed rebar into a piece of cardboard to stand the pipe upright. This allowed him 360 degree access to the pipe for an easier and more efficient paint job.
How It's Put Together:
To recap Corey's desk, the inspiration and design concept draws from a previous butcher block desk found here. The fittings and pipe create the frame while the butcher block table top is used to create the desk platform. The Flange fittings are used to support and attach the table top to the frame. While, the Two Socket Cross and 90° Side Outlet help to create the frame and corners.
In the image above you can see where the Flange fitting attaches to the table top. You can also see how the Two Socket Cross allows for the vertical length of pipe to run through it while attaching two separate lengths of pipe to create the t-shape. This forms a fundamental support for the desk. The 90 Side Outlet Tee allows for the creation of the corner that makes this L-shaped desk possible.
Here, you can again see how the 90° Side Outlet Tee is used to change direction allowing for the creation of the corner. The Single Socket Tee is used to terminate the end of the lower pipe and is used to add additional support in the upper length of pipe.
Overall, Corey's desk looks great! He did a fantastic job and we want to thank him for submitting his project. Hopefully the overview of his desk will be helpful in building your own unique creation.
