Aged Metal and Oak Board Rolling Coffee Table

This beautifully designed DIY coffee table was built by Keren, one of our customers from Texas. She brought together Kee Klamp fittings, aged metal, and dark stained oak boards into a stellar combination that offers both form and function. The metal base of the coffee table is constructed with Kee Klamp pipe fittings and galvanized metal pipe. To give the pipe and fitting an "aged" look she treated them with toilet bowel cleaner! She found a tutorial on aging metal on the Stone Gable Blog. Here's what Keren had to say about aging the metal.

I used Zud, which I bought at Lowes. It is a gel so I could paint it on. That was especially helpful with the wheel assembly since I did not want to get stuff on the wheels. I used steel wool and sandpaper to scratch up the metal first, then painted on the Zud, let it sit for an hour, then rinsed it off and made sure I dried it thoroughly.

Keren made the table top and shelf out of some oak boards that she stained using steel wool and white vinegar. After she stained the top and shelf, she used a sealer to give it some stain resistance.

The bottom shelf is also supported with the help of a Kee Klamp fitting called a Type 70 Rail Fitting. The Type 70 bites into the pipe with a set screw, but then attaches to the board with two regular wood screws.

To make the coffee table mobile, Keren used our standard casters in the bottom pipes. Two of the casters have breaking mechanisms to ensure that it doesn't roll away at the wrong time!

Keren didn't go it alone when she designed her table. She reached out to our team for design assistance. We help to specify just the right fittings for the job. In the end she was very pleased with the result!
