Table Frames for Any Table Top

Table Frames for Any Table Top

We've finally made it. We've covered the layout of our office, the cubicle design, and the adjustable height desks that allow us to sit or stand whenever we please. Now it's time to wrap up this series with an in-depth look at the tables in our new office. If you haven't read through our previous articles be sure to catch up:

For many years we have been struck by the creations that our customers have imagined and subsequently built. As an inspiration to our team, we too, wanted to create something truly unique.

So far, we had devised the perfect office space and crafted virtually every piece of furniture in our new office to feature Kee Klamp fittings and pipe. Next up, were the tables, starting with the conference room.

For the table in the conference room, we wanted it to feature a unique table top. After searching for ideas, a company that we provide bases for, Solid State Concrete, introduced the idea of using concrete for the table top. We have enjoyed their work and therefore decided to give it a go.

"It was much simpler than building our own wood top and we love the concept of the weight and finish. We haven't regretted going in this direction one bit. It's the perfect surface for a conference table." - Chris, Simplified Building GM

Now that we knew what top we wanted to use, it was time to build a frame to support it. The concrete slabs for the table top are extremely heavy, so we needed to build a frame that could support the weight.

We came up with a design that features two bracing supports, one at the top of the frame and the other at the bottom. This would help to strengthen the frame and provide stability for the table top.

As an added bonus, the top support also helps to screen some of the wires that are connected into the table top outlets. It also gives us the option of attaching paneling to the underside of the table if we wanted to go that direction in the future.

The unique design of the frame also gives us the ability to split the table into two separate pieces. While it is not our intention to do this often, it does provide some added flexibility. Each concrete slab has four legs under it to support the weight of each section. When split, the two tables are just as sturdy as they are when combined.

Large casters sit at the bottom of each leg allowing for the table to be moved when necessary. We planned to use the conference room for video shoots and just a few months ago when we shot a series of videos, the casters made it easy to move the table out of the way to allow for more room to shoot.

One final feature to note, are the outlets. The outlets fit into a small hole in each of the concrete slabs. When the concrete was poured, it was molded to feature a hole in each of the slabs that would fit one of the outlets perfectly. The concrete mold was built specifically to our specifications and it made for a very nice finished edge. The people over at Solid State Concrete did a fantastic job!

However, these outlets have proved to be a bit of a nuisance, in that they get in the way of our ping pong playing! The conference room table is a perfect length for the game and it's pretty much transformed our conference room into a rec room. The concrete works perfectly as a surface and the table has added the dual benefit of allowing us to break up the day with some friendly matches.

Accompanying the conference table, is a small side table. It too features a concrete table top. The table is perfect to place food during lunch meetings or just whenever we need some extra table top space.

For the coffee table, we wanted a design that would show off the Kee Klamp fittings and pipe. Building a frame that would sit the table top down in between the pipes was the best way to accomplish this. To do this, the table top sit downs in between the pipes resting on a set of M50 fittings to allow for the recessed build. The added benefit of this design is that the frame can support people who want to rest their leg up on the table. Again, we decided to go with a concrete table top to give the table a unique look.

For the kitchen tables, we decided to go in a different direction. These tables would feature a very simple design that would take advantage of the table tops used on our old office desks.

In designing the kitchen tables, we wanted to be able to slide two chairs underneath on two sides. To do this, we put each of the legs as close to the corner to allow enough space for the chairs.

The legs are attached to the bottom of the wood table top using a Flange fitting and the opposite side of the pipe is capped off using a Plastic Plug. The table top is a Gerton beechwood top from IKEA measuring in at 61" long by 29 1/2" wide.

All in all we have loved how the tables have turned out. We specifically admire the look of the concrete tables.

However, after some time in our new office, we discovered that the concrete table tops can be a little sensitive to water. Our water bottles and coffee mugs would start to leave circle marks after only a short while. So we decided to get some coasters to prevent this from happening further.

The concrete is not a "perfect surface" by any means. There can be some informalities in the surface and it is very heavy, so people should know this if they decide to go with a concrete top. We used casters on the bottom of the conference table frame to make it possible to move, so that's something to keep in mind for any design ideas.

Whether you go with a wood top or a concrete one, Kee Klamp fittings and pipe can handle the job. Kee Klamp has proven to be a strong, durable, and easy to work with material for building almost any kind of furniture. Demonstrated clearly in the build out of our new office and the many happy customers who have used Kee Klamp in their homes and offices.
