DIY Drafting Table Built with Kee Klamp

When Mike needed to build a set of drafting tables for his company's new bid room, he thought of Kee Klamp for the project. Mike had used Kee Klamp in the past and felt it would be a good fit for the tables. With the help of our design team, Mike was able to put together two drafting tables, and a meeting table, for the company at which he works, Fite Building Co.

In this post, we'll take a closer look at the drafting tables Mike and his company built, how they are constructed, and any other important details. Let's take a look:

DIY Drafting Table

Fite Building Co. uses sets of drawings during their bid and building process. This type of table allows people to see a larger format, as compared to a flat table, where everything is not as clearly visible. The bid room gives workers a space outside their offices to review these drawings and they are accessible to all of the people estimating a project.

The company's old bid room was getting a bit too crowded so they moved into a new one. In doing so, however, they needed a few new drafting tables. Like mentioned earlier, Mike was familiar with Kee Klamp and decided to reach out to Simplified Building to see if the fittings would work for this project.

He was looking for an industry look and needed a heavy duty solution that would be reliable, yet still look professional.

Our projects team worked with Mike on a design that would work for the drafting tables. The team came up with a design that utilizes the Swivel Flange fitting to create the angle needed. Mike wanted the table top, for each of the drafting tables, to be 35" from the ground in the front and 42" from the ground in the back.

The Swivel Flange allows has a joint in the middle of the fitting that gives the flange a range of motion of 160 degrees. This would allow the frame to create the angle needed to achieve Mike's dimensions. The fitting has a socket on one end that accepts pipe, in this case the table frame upright. The other end has a flange that can be mount to a surface or platform, in this case the desk table top.

Take a closer look at the design of each table in the drawing above. Each uses the Swivel Flange fitting to create the angle needed for the table top. However, the frames differ slightly on each table. Because the table on the right was a bit longer (The one on the left is 6 ft. long and the one on the right is 10 ft. long), it required an extra brace in the middle to provide a proper amount of support to the table top.

Here is a better look at the table frame itself:

The table tops were built using 3/4" plywood with 1” oak plywood on top and a solid oak band. After building the table tops and sanding them down, Mike and his team stained the tops and applied four coats of polyurethane.

The tables have worked out well for Mike and Fite Building Co. They were able to create a set of drafting tables that met their required dimensions perfectly, not only in length and width, but height as well.

Another advantage to using Kee Klamp fittings for the table frames is that the fittings are adjustable. This enable the frames to be modified without completely disassembling the table. This also allows the frames to be expanded on in the future if need be.

One final thing to note, while Mike didn't opt for this feature, using Kee Klamp fittings and pipe you can create a table frame that is adjustable in height. By using the proper fittings (see this kit for more detail), the table height can be adjusted. Something that might be good for new employees or adjusting the desk for a more comfortable sitting position.
