Protecting Warehouse Walkways from Material Handling Traffic

Monday, October 20th, 2008

The warehouse environment is full of hazards.  One of the many hazards that plant managers need to be aware of is protecting walking workers from workers operating material handling equipment such as pickers and forklifts.

A recent customer utilized our Kwik Kit Safety Rail product to provide a safe right of way to pedestrians walking near utility vehicles in the warehouse.

Here is the scenario BEFORE the Kwik Kit Safety Rail was installed:
No physical barrier to protect the worker.  Only a visual barrier of cones was present to designate the walkway.

Here is the scenario AFTER the Kwik Kit Safety Railing was installed:
Workers clearly separated from hazards.  Workers are clearly aware of when they were leaving the “safe zone” via the self closing safety gate

Kwik Kits provided a solution that was:

  • Durable - able to withstand impacts and protect workers in the walkway.
  • Easy to use - Uprights come preassembled and powder coated safety yellow.
  • Modular - Can fit a wide variety of configurations.
  • Safe - The ultimate priority when considering a product.  Does it protect the worker from the hazard?  Kwik Kit does the job!

Helping You Get the Job Done – Railing Drawings

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

At Simplified Building Concepts, we try to go the extra mile to help you understand how our railing products work.  Frequently, we receive quotes for complex railing jobs where the only document supplied is a 2D landscape or architectural layout.  When you order a railing system from us we can supply a 3D drawing, complete with fitting labels.  These drawings will help you communicate to your contractors exactly what needs to go where.

Here are some samples from a recent job.  Our CSP, Sam Wender, completed the 3D drawings from the 2D layout below.

Here’s a sample of the drawings that were supplied:

Here are some of the 3D drawings that Sam produced.

Ramp Safety Rail and Safety Gate Installation

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Sometimes we have the privilege of visiting the facilities that have utilized some of our our safety products.  Below are some pictures of a safety rail on a ramp and a safety gate.

Ramp Safety Rail

The handrail here is used to protect the side of the ramp.  This rail has a unique feature: the top of the rail bends ninety degrees to protect people from the corner of the loading dock.  This rail reflects some of the unique configurations that can be built using Kee Klamp fittings.

Safety Gate

This safety gate was used to protect the entrance to an open elevator shaft.  There used to be a “fence” the slid up and down to protect the area.  The gate has spring loaded hinges so it will close automatically (not leaving it to the worker to create a safe environment).

Contractor Opportunity: Build ADA Handrails

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

For years welding fabricators have had a monopoly on installing ADA handrails. Our Series 500 ADA fittings make it possible for contractors to now enter the area of handrail construction. Listen to what contractor Andy Pease had to say:

“Now that I’ve worked with the fittings, I could build and significantly improve this same Kee Klamp project in one third of the time. This product gives fence contractors the opportunity to compete with fabricators who can bend and weld on site. Because there hasn’t been much competition, I think it’s a substantial market with good margins, but they can’t send guys like me into a hatchet fight without a hatchet. Either way, I’m going to start knocking on doors to see if I can get the GC’s that use me for fence to call me for handrail quotes as well.”

Our Customer Solutions Providers will help you understand our system and get the proper bill of materials together for constructing these types of jobs.

ADA & OSHA Handrail Design - Andy Pease

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Below are pictures of an ADA & OSHA compliant handrail built by Andy Pease in Ohio. We worked with him to design an ADA & OSHA compliant handrail for two different entrances to this new building. This is a great example of how our ADA fittings can be used to design an affordable, durable and maintainable ADA compliant solution. Look for more pictures as the project draws toward completion.

KeeHatch - Rooftop Hatch & Railing System

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

KeeHatch

Designed for Safety

KeeHatch is designed for safe egress and ingress through roof access hatches and for protection of the roof opening while the roof hatch is open. Employers are required by law to provide a workplace that is free from recognized hazards. A safety railing system protects workers from roof opening falls that can result in injury.
OSHA Approved

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.23 requires that the exposed sides of openings in roofs or floors have some form of guardrail protection. When the hinged cover for an opening is left up, the exposed sides must be appropriately protected. KeeHatch Safety Railing System meets both OSHA Standards 29 CFR 1910.23 and 29 CFR 1910.27.
